Greystones Public Realm Plan ‘Highly Commended’ at the Irish Landscape Institute awards

The Paul Hogarth Company are delighted to announce that the Greystones Public Realm Plan has won Highly Commended in the Landscape Planning category at the Irish Landscape Institute award ceremony on 8th October 2020.

The project was commissioned by Greystones 2020 and Wicklow County Council and resulted in the production of a highly transformative and visionary document. From the outset, the plan sought to make Greystones a much more sustainable location to help address the climatic, demographic, and economic challenges faced by the town.

The project was a community-led initiative, driven by a steering group of residents, business owners, council officials and elected members. Accordingly, the multi-disciplinary team at The Paul Hogarth Company ensured that local voices were central to shaping the plan and facilitated a collaborative methodology with extensive public engagement.

The award-winning Public Realm Plan includes a broad range of innovative and bespoke projects to be delivered across the short, medium, and longer-term by a range of stakeholders. Looking to the future, the plan can now be used as the basis for upcoming funding applications to help deliver this exciting new shared vision for Greystones.

Grainne Mc Loughlin, chairperson of Greystones 2020 said “ we are delighted to have done so well at these awards and that the plan is recognised by experts in their field as one that will enhance and benefit Greystones in the future”

Calling all Artists: Christmas Shop Window Painting Proposal

Greystones 2020 would like to commission a painter with experience of painting  on glass to paint 12 windows in Greystones with  the theme The Twelve Days of Christmas.

The max size is 2msq for each window .

Each window is painted differently to the theme of the twelve days of Christmas.

  1. A partridge in a pear tree
  2. Two turtle doves
  3. Three French hens
  4. Four calling birds
  5. Five gold rings
  6. Six geese a-laying
  7. Seven swans a-swimming
  8. Eight maids-a-milking
  9. Nine ladies dancing
  10. Ten lords a-leaping
  11. Eleven pipers piping
  12. Twelve drummers drumming

 

The above is an idea – could be more elaborate….Must be colourful and Fun Looking

The maximum budget is €1500.00.  Greystones 2020 is a voluntary group so if you can do for less – that would be great.

The windows must be completed by Friday 20th November.

Greystones Public Realm Plan 2020

The Greystones Public Realm Plan was commissioned in August 2019 by Greystones 2020 and Wicklow County Council. It reflects recognition that the town is economically successful and vibrant, albeit with many constraints due to Covid-19.  However, it faces ongoing challenges associated with continued growth and development pressures.

This subsequent Plan has been led by the Paul Hogarth Company, a multidisciplinary team of landscape architects, Urban Designers and planners.  It was jointly shaped by Greystones 2020, Wicklow County Council, members of the public and local stakeholders.

Mashed potatoes, roasters veg, Yorkshire pudding and gravy were absolutely delicious! Cheesecake of the day was Baileys and Twirl… nicest Cheesecake I have ever had! The staff were so lovely and attentive. Social distancing and sanitisation protocols were very much in place! Highly recommend for some very good food!”

Bray Head, Belmont Demense, Little & Great Sugarloaf Walk

This beautiful show presented by Wicklow native and dedicated walker Pól O Conghaile, reveals underexplored paths, new access routes and until now, inaccessible trails in his home county.  The route includes rugged mountain climbs, flat and quiet forest paths, rich farmland and country roads. The trail, which can be completed in a day, for the experienced walker, or broken into shorter walks, reveals what is best in Wicklow landscapes from breathtaking sea vistas to magnificent rural views stretching across fields, mountains and skyscapes.     Pól begins the walk early in the morning on Bray Promenade, climbs up over Bray Head; a much quieter route than neighbouring paths; quite quickly ascending into an almost rural setting with wide views across five counties.  He continues down along quiet, well marked ways into Belmont Demesne.

Belmont Demesne has recently been opened to the public, who can connect their walk from Bray Head along a new access route onto the Little Sugarloaf.  Enjoying an exhilarating turn with Fat Bikes Adventures, based in Belmont Demesne,  Pól then continues past Arthur’s Barn, on foot to the Little Sugarloaf accessing it along a newly laid path which brings walkers around the side of the mountain. Chatting to some other walkers en route, Pól then descends along quiet roads to Kilmacanogue and onwards along the old Viking trail which skirts the side of the Great Sugarloaf where he completes his walk.  Walkers familiar with the Little Sugarloaf and Bray Head will delight in this lovely, new, marked trail which adds a further new route to Co. Wicklow’s ever growing network of walks.

East Coast Nature Reserve – Birdwatch Ireland

Officially opened in 2009, the East Coast Nature Reserve is our largest reserve covering 92ha. It forms part of the extensive Murrough Wetlands, an important coastal wetland complex which is designated as a Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation. Originally, the grasslands were intensively farmed, with tree-lined watercourses and a conifer plantation growing within the fen. Now, following management through an EU LIFE project between 2003 and 2007, the reserve offers a variety of habitats, from rare fen to wet grasslands to birch woodland, which can all be explored on foot through marked walking trails and observation hides.

Limited parking is available at the main entrance to the reserve along Sea Road (turn left after the Castle Inn, Newcastle) or the coastal car parks at either Six-mile or Five-mile Point. There are marked walking trails between each entrance that offer good views over the whole area; please keep to these trails for your own safety and to avoid disturbance to the wildlife. Please do not open gates or climb over fences. Grazing animals are present throughout the summer months. Please respect the wildlife and other visitors and refrain from bringing dogs onto the reserve, other than Guide dogs.
