Following their performance for St Valentine’s 2019, TWO DIVAS AND A PIANO (Flo McSweeney, Carmel McCreagh and Fiachra Trench) return to the Whale Theatre with their show, Two Divas and a Piano — a wry look at love and loss with songs by such composers and performers as Irving Berlin, Jacques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Duke Ellington, Melody Gardot, Mick Jagger, Lieber and Stoller, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Stephen Sondheim, Tom Waits and many others.
It sounds simple — two singers, one pianist and a book of great songs, but what Flo McSweeney, Carmel McCreagh and Fiachra Trench are doing takes a lot of talent, experience and sheer guts. Each song is ‘owned’ by the vocalists and turned into something authentic and emotional.
Behind them, Trench’s sparse accompaniments are what you would expect of an arranger who has written for Phil Lynott, Paul McCartney,
Elvis Costello and many others, and who provided the string arrangement for the Pogues’ classic “Fairytale of New York”. The Irish Times
