Steve Cooney & Cormac Breatnach. Support: Martin Dunlea @ The Hot Spot

This is a rare opportunity to see Cormac Breatnach (Whistles) and Steve Cooney (Guitar) perform together despite having collaborated with each other in many musical events over three decades. Special support from Wicklow local & long time fellow-musician, Martin Dunlea.

Throughout his long career, Cormac Juan Breatnach has recorded on more than 30 albums and played with artists as diverse as Elvis Costello, Vanessa Williams, Donal Lunny, Bernard Purdie and Máire Breatnach. In 2018 Cormac collaborated with Daire Bracken and Martin Tourish to record his ‘Whistle Blower’ CD; he performed his compositions live with film and graphics in 2019. Cormac is currently working on bringing his musical/poetry show ‘Loco Por Lorca’ to Irish audiences in October, and to Granada, Spain, in November 2019.

Steve Cooney is best known for his development of an influential style of guitar accompaniment to traditional Irish music. He came to Ireland from Australia in 1980 and maintains his connections with the Aboriginal culture there. Creatively involved in more than 240 CDs, he has worked with many iconic international artists. A poet and songwriter, Cooney completed a Ph.D. in 2018 on an intuitive musical notation system that he devised. In 2007, at the Rostrevor Fiddler’s Green Festival, Seamus Heaney wrote: “Master Cooney restores the ancient link between lyre and lyric, between poetry and performance, the rhapsody and rascality”.

Cork-born Guitarist, Martin Dunlea is a self-taught musician who started out in folk rock and blues bands in Ireland, and abroad. Martin went on to play and record with the innovative band ”Soon” and simultaneously developed an interest in traditional Irish music. He is also a composer and has appeared on many notable TV and radio programmes. Martin has performed extensively with Cormac Breatnach; recently recorded with American singer/actress Vanessa Williams and has just written, recorded, mixed and mastered his first solo album “When the Present and the Past Align”. He plays all the instruments with the exception of the Harp on the title track, performed by Sue Daly.
